Godzilla (ゴジラ, Gojira) is a giant reptilian monster featured in the 1998 TriStar blithe series Godzilla: The Series , and first introduced in the last scene of the 1998 film GODZILLA . Information technology is the 2nd incarnation of Godzilla to star in an American animated serial, after the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla.

The only 1 of the original Godzilla's offspring to survive the destruction of Madison Square Garden, this Godzilla imprinted upon scientist Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos later his egg hatched in close proximity to Nick inside the building'south ruins. Godzilla rapidly matured into an developed and assumed the title of "King of the Monsters," becoming an ally to mankind and assisting Nick and his enquiry team H.E.A.T. in dealing with other mutations around the earth before they could threaten innocent people. Different his father, this Godzilla is portrayed more alike to the traditional interpretation of the character from Toho's film series, possessing an impressive resistance to conventional weaponry and preferring to fight attackers head-on, as well as utilizing the graphic symbol'southward trademark atomic breath.

Name [ edit | edit source ]

This incarnation of the monster is simply referred to as "Godzilla" throughout Godzilla: The Series . In the episode "Competition," the Japanese characters ever refer to him every bit "Gojira," fifty-fifty when speaking English. Fans frequently refer to this version of Godzilla as Godzilla Junior or Zilla Junior in club to distinguish him from other incarnations of the character, although neither name is official. The Japanese book Godzilla 1954-1999 Super Complete Works refers to this Godzilla every bit Godzilla the Second (ゴジラ二世, Gojira Nisei) [three] while Godzilla Dictionary [New Edition] calls him Second Generation American Version Godzilla (2代目アメリカ版ゴジラ, Nidaime Amerika-ban Gojira). [4]

There is a popular rumor claiming that Toho honored this version of Godzilla by officially dubbing him "Godzilla Junior," seeing that he was supposedly worthy of the "Godzilla" proper noun. However, this rumor was later clarified to be simulated, with the monster still legally trademarked as "Godzilla" by Toho, who has added no comment to the matter.

Development [ edit | edit source ]

The look of Godzilla in Godzilla: The Series was majorly adapted from Patrick Tatopoulos' decided blueprint for the 1998 movie by pb character designer Fil Barlow, who further developed the pattern while working closely aslope executive producer Jeff Kline and producer/head managing director Audu Paden. [1] Due to production of the series beginning prior to the release of the film, yet, Barlow relied solely on sketches he fabricated of Patrick Tatopoulos' Godzilla maquette and animatronic head. [9] Tatopoulos also provided a great deal of input of his own early on regarding the adaptation and design of the new Godzilla. [i] Similarly, the newborn Godzilla from the first episode of Godzilla: The Serial was based on maquettes of the Baby Godzillas from the film. [10]

False "Thingy" model sheet by Fil Barlow [11]

Godzilla: The Serial was kept under tight wraps during its production and equally such, the new Godzilla's design was also a safely guarded secret, even from many members of the staff team. Because the design had not been revealed to everyone working on the series until the release of the picture show, very loose representations of the character were used during the storyboarding process. All outlines for the serial fell under the false title "Estrus SEEKERS" in guild to keep the true nature of the project a hugger-mugger from the public, with concept sketches and other early designs for Godzilla referred to as "Gorgon" and even "Thingy" [ane] or "Thingie." [2] A model sail was created for the faux "Thingy" graphic symbol past Fil Barlow, sporting a Spinosaurus-like dorsum fin and a significantly less defined jaw among other changes, which was used as a reference for proportions for the storyboarders until the official design was released. [11]

Originally, information technology was intended for there to be a more prominent intercommunication between Godzilla and the main character Nick Tatopoulos, thus concepts for a number of devices for Godzilla to use were created. These included devices which allowed for Nick to ride on the back of and steer Godzilla, such as contact lens appliances or an external, goggle-like optical fixture which would be transported to Godzilla via helicopter. [1] Although the majority of these concepts would ultimately become unused, the goggles were retooled and used for the unaired episode "Vision," in which Godzilla is fitted with a special visor to runway the movement of a flock of giant mutated hummingbirds.

Design [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla model canvas past Fil Barlow

While this Godzilla's overall pattern is generally unchanged from that of his father in the 1998 pic, he bore a bright bluish coloration in early on production artwork, and is a desaturated imperial that is lighter on the undersides in the serial itself. Additionally, he has ruby eyes with orangish pupils and lacks the fifth vestigial digit on his easily that his male parent and brethren possessed. When firing his Atomic Burn down Jiff, his dorsal plates and eyes briefly low-cal upwards.

Personality [ edit | edit source ]

This Godzilla'south personality is very different from that of his late father. He is much more aggressive than his father; similar the Japanese Godzilla, rather than fleeing from an assault, he volition normally fight his attackers. Godzilla likewise exhibits planning and strategy in his fighting style, though he volition resort to brute strength if he is angered enough. While he is aggressive when provoked, Godzilla is generally docile and peaceful and will avoid causing devastation or bringing impairment to humans or other creatures unless he or his adoptive father are threatened. In the episode "Surface area 51", Godzilla has responses to dissimilar types of music; country music results in an apathetic response while stone and roll results in an agitated response.

Nick Tatopoulos : "It doesn't act on pure instinct, similar a lizard. It's displaying intelligence; even loyalty."
Elsie Chapman : "Sounds like somebody is projecting."
― Nick Tatopoulos and Elsie Chapman discuss Godzilla's beliefs as they feed him fish in "New Family: Function 1"

For a mutation, Godzilla is very intelligent and is apparently able to brand moral decisions: during his fight with Nessie in "DeadLoch," her offspring gets stolen and they cease fighting to retrieve the baby together. H.E.A.T. member Monique Dupre stated that rather than this beingness a truthful "moral determination," information technology is merely instinctual for creatures to piece of work together. Godzilla falls in love with a mutant Komodo dragon named Komodithrax and becomes surrogate father to her unborn offspring in "Terminate of the Line," as unlike his father, this Godzilla is sterile and cannot produce his ain offspring. Unfortunately, Komodithrax and the giant egg she laid roughshod down a crack in the ice and evidently perished at the end of the episode.

Godzilla'due south most prominent trait, though, is his protectiveness and loyalty towards his surrogate begetter, Dr. Nick Tatopoulos. When Nick is journeying around the world, Godzilla is never far behind, and will often appear to rescue Nick and the other members of the H.Eastward.A.T team from unsafe situations. In one state of affairs in detail, Godzilla managed to grab Nick (who was falling) on top of his head before letting him down gently. The only fourth dimension Godzilla's loyalty faltered was when he met his biological father, resurrected as Cyber Godzilla, for the first fourth dimension. He was hesitating to attack his parent despite being told by Nick to practice then, and soon had his mind taken over past the Leviathan Aliens, with Nick remarking that Godzilla had "dumped him" for his birth male parent. Thankfully, Godzilla after bankrupt gratis of the aliens' influence and chose to fight for Nick over Cyber Godzilla, willingly destroying his own biological begetter in order to protect Nick.

"

Dr. Tatopoulos's methods can best be described as unconventional, if not suicidal. However, contrary to conventional wisdom on cannibal dinosaurs, this animal appears to only hunt his casualty upon necessity.

— Elsie Chapman monologues regarding Godzilla's behaviors in "New Family: Part i"

Like his relatives, Godzilla eats fish, and was even lured into a trap by Cameron Winter with a big amount of fish, like to the way his parent was lured into Flatiron Square. It is stated that he does not hunt for more food than he needs. Additionally, the monster displays pet-like or otherwise trained creature behaviors, such equally licking Nick when he initially recognizes him; circling the ground briefly before laying down to expect for Nick to come back; patiently awaiting to exist thrown fish to swallow, and similar a trained pet, he tries to cease whatever he is doing for a moment whenever Nick calls for him.

Origins [ edit | edit source ]

This Godzilla was the terminal surviving offspring of the showtime Godzilla that attacked New York in 1998. He, likewise every bit all of his siblings, were eggs laid inside Madison Foursquare Garden past Godzilla. Dissimilar his siblings, this single baby Godzilla survived the bombing of Madison Foursquare Garden while even so in his egg and was later found by Dr. Niko Tatopoulos, who kept him safe from the military. According to Nick, this Godzilla is sterile, unlike his begetter, who was capable of asexual reproduction.

"New Family: Part 1" [ edit | edit source ]

After his egg survived the explosion of Madison Square Garden, Godzilla hatched in front of Dr. Niko Tatopoulos, who was covered in amniotic fluid from the other eggs after slipping into a puddle of it while searching the ruins for more eggs. Godzilla imprinted upon Nick, as he was covered with the aroma of his kind. Nick scared off the infant past causing a spark, and information technology fled into the Hudson River.

Some time after, the hatchling, now grown to 35 feet in height, appeared where Nick and his scientist colleagues had prepare their base of operations of operations in a warehouse by the sea. Despite initially beingness ambitious, Godzilla remembered Nick as his "parent" and became friendly. At the aforementioned time in Jamaica, swimmers and ships were disappearing under mysterious circumstances, leading the U.S. government to believe the newly-hatched Godzilla was behind information technology. As Nick studied and even trained Godzilla, the armed services intervened under the command of Major Hicks after beingness tipped off about the creature's beingness past Monique Dupre, a French Secret Service agent trying to ensure Godzilla was wiped out for good. The armed forces engaged the monster near Nick's facility, and the creature was wounded past arms and patently killed afterwards being hit by an airstrike while in the water.

"New Family: Part 2" [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla fights the Mutant Squids

Afterwards on, Godzilla revealed himself to yet exist alive equally he rescued Nick and his colleagues from a shoal of Mutant Behemothic Squids in Jamaica. Withal, it turned out that these squids were actually fleeing from a much larger predator, Crustaceous Male monarch. C-Rex proceeded to attack, only Godzilla arrived to fight the body of water beast, eventually defeating it subsequently causing a cliff to collapse onto it. Godzilla subsequently freed the lost ships and swimmers, which were stuck to the seafloor in tar produced by C-Male monarch. Every bit a result, Major Hicks decided to spare Godzilla. Godzilla returned with Nick to New York, and took up residence nigh his allies' headquarters.

"Talkin' Trash" [ edit | edit source ]

After the Nanotech Animal absorbed oil from a ship and was almost to attack the Heat-Seeker, Godzilla emerged from the ocean and battled it, bringing it to a nearby refinery on the surface. He attempted to rip information technology apart, simply it but grew back what had been torn off. The brute and so wrapped itself effectually Godzilla, roofing his entire body. Godzilla fired his atomic jiff, splashed around in the h2o, and scratched his body on the ocean floor and rocks all in attempts to become information technology off of him, just information technology refused to let become. It finally came off when he fired his atomic breath once more and so tore at it with his jaws, just only because the fauna decided to feed on the oil in the refinery instead. Godzilla chased after it as it grew to a massive size after consuming even more oil, growing even taller then Godzilla. Yet, the H.E.A.T. team destroys the beast with a virus. Major Hicks manages to continue the military from firing at Godzilla, with the excuse that they could end up blowing up the refinery, and Godzilla returns to his new lair.

"Monster Wars: Part ane" [ edit | edit source ]

Despite the ample supply of fish given to him by Nick and his colleagues, now known equally H.Due east.A.T., Godzilla began to forage the oceans, and nearly killed several fisherman when he attacked their boat, just H.E.A.T. was able to prevent disaster by using a recording of Nick'southward voice emitted from N.I.Grand.East.Fifty.. Due to Leviathan Alien interference, H.E.A.T. disbanded, and Godzilla followed Nick to Lagos, Nigeria to face up the Giant Bat, which had been terrorizing the area. Subsequently the Bat attacked Nick in a mangrove swamp, Godzilla chased it into the city where he tackled information technology into the water. Information technology released a sonic screech at Godzilla, causing him to requite upwards his hold and permit the Bat escape. The Bat and then lured him into getting his head stuck in some steel bridge framing, and attempted to suck his claret before flying away under the command of its conflicting masters. Nick then freed Godzilla, and he swam abroad.

"Monster Wars: Role 2" [ edit | edit source ]

Later arriving to salvage Nick at Sandy Signal Armed forces Base, Godzilla discovered that his adoptive father'south assailant was his biological father resurrected as a cyborg dubbed Cyber Godzilla. Being incredibly conflicted virtually having to cull between both parents, Godzilla did not attack, and in his moment of hesitance, he savage under Leviathan Conflicting mind control and helped Cyber Godzilla assail Nick. The Northward.I.G.E.L. probe was used to distract the Godzillas as the humans made their escape. Godzilla and Cyber Godzilla followed them to Site Omega, where he was met with hostility from his many former enemies gathered there, including the Male monarch Cobra, the Giant Mutant Queen Bee, El Gusano Gigante, and a Huge Mutant Rat. The Leviathan Aliens halted the imminent disharmonize, and all monsters on the isle were so sent into the earth'south major cities to cause destruction. Godzilla was sent to Washington, D.C.

"Monster Wars: Function 3" [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla connected to terrorize Washington, D.C. until H.E.A.T. destroyed the listen control transmitter. He then made his way back to Site Omega, where Nick and Cyber Godzilla were preparing for a boxing. Afterward thorough consideration, Godzilla chose Nick, and destroyed some Leviathan Conflicting ships that were accompanying his biological father. More ships so blasted Godzilla and left him unconscious on the beach. Nick roused him with smoke, and Godzilla quickly employed cunning strategy to defeat his father, by burrowing hugger-mugger, waiting for Cyber Godzilla to peer into the pigsty, and blasting him with his atomic breath. While Cyber Godzilla was notwithstanding on the basis, Godzilla pinned him downwards and blasted him yet again. Their fight connected until Godzilla tackled his father into the water and tore out his inner mechanisms with his mouth, destroying Cyber Godzilla for good. This defeat caused the Leviathan Alien Core Collective to call for a retreat.

"End of the Line" [ edit | edit source ]

After Nick was attacked by a Giant Turtle on his cruise with Audrey, Godzilla headed towards the island they ended up drifting to. Once he finally arrived, he encountered Komodithrax. Randy causeless that the two monsters were going to start fighting, simply they really started a mating dance. Godzilla and so fended off H.E.A.T., condign ambitious due to his animalistic instincts. Godzilla helped Komodithrax build a nest for her egg (which she was able to fertilize herself) but was driven to the ocean by H.E.A.T. (using N.I.Yard.E.50.) playing the sounds of Komodithrax to depict him away from the military. Godzilla destroyed N.I.G.E.L. in one case he constitute out that the sounds were artificial and then went back to the nest, where Komodithrax had been defeated past the Giant Turtle. He battled the Giant Turtle to save the egg, but was also knocked out. Godzilla reawakened to the sound of Komodithrax'southward final roar as she plummeted thousands of feet below, along with the Giant Turtle and the egg. With his family gone, Godzilla left the isle and returned to his lair.

"Cash of the Titans" [ edit | edit source ]

While the H.E.A.T. squad was beingness distracted past a Behemothic Water Beetle, Godzilla was sedated and captured past men sent past Maximilian Spiel, a promoter of battles betwixt mutations. Godzilla somewhen awakened inside an enclosure and attempted to escape by using both his diminutive breath and by burrowing into the ground, but neither method was effective. He sat in his belongings pen until he was awakened again when a beam was fired at his head by Spiel to agitate him and go him to fight the Rhinosaurus, another mutation Spiel had enslaved. Godzilla once again attempted to escape by clawing at the walls, but information technology was as futile as his previous escape attempts. When Nick and Elsie were dropped into the ring, Godzilla fought the Rhinosaurus, who was chasing them, to defend them. Spiel then used the beam again to stun Godzilla so the Rhinosaurus could win, but Mendel blew up the spotlight, allowing Godzilla to defeat the Rhinosaurus. He so threw the Giant H2o Beetle into the control tower before jumping out of the loonshit direct into the body of water, presumably swimming back to his lair.

Abilities [ edit | edit source ]

This Godzilla shows a variety of powers and skills that set him apart from his monster enemies. He is generally regarded as the strongest mutation on Earth within the show's continuity.

Physical capabilities [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla has demonstrated great physical strength. He often overpowers other mutations with sheer brute strength, being able to lift other mutations into the air. His claws are extremely sharp and are capable of shredding steel. Godzilla's tail is an incredibly powerful weapon every bit well, and can exist used to crush and strike his opponents.

Speed and agility [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla is incredibly fast and nimble, and tin can run at speeds up to 300 miles per hour. [1] Moreover, Godzilla can perform leaps over great distances. He is likewise able to quickly scale and perch himself atop buildings despite his massive size and weight. In addition, the monster is shown to take quick reflexes.

Helicopters keep upwardly with the rapidly-swimming Godzilla

Godzilla spends most of his time in the h2o, as he is a natural swimmer and is able to breathe underwater. He is able to travel thousands of miles in the ocean without displaying whatever signs of fatigue, and is said to swim faster than a submarine'south torpedoes. [one] In "D.O.A." and "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been," Godzilla rested unconscious underwater for an extended period of time while sick.

Durability [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla regenerates destroyed tissue and regains consciousness

Some other ability that sets this Godzilla apart from his parent is his ability to withstand high levels of damage. Whereas his begetter was killed by a relatively small amount of missiles, and indeed this Godzilla bled when striking past missiles equally a juvenile in "New Family: Role 1," every bit an adult he is ofttimes shown withstanding hits from large amounts of heavy arms with no harm, much like the original Japanese Godzilla, and is stated to exist immune to conventional weaponry in "An Early on Frost."

Regeneration [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla possesses a strong healing cistron, able to heal from injury or even poisoning adequately quickly. If injured enough, Godzilla will fall into a coma-similar land where his body volition rapidly heal itself, allowing for him to wake up fully healed. The healing factor was only shown to fail twice, by farthermost poisoning from Ts-eh-Go and by infection from Bacillus.

Atomic Fire Breath [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla fires his Atomic Burn down Breath

This Godzilla'due south signature weapon is his green Diminutive Fire Breath, also referred to as his Power Breath in "What a Long, Strange Trip It'south Been," something his father lacked. A blueish glow runs upwards his dorsal plates and reaches his eyes earlier he finally unleashes the attack. The Atomic Fire Breath has a long range and is extremely hot, capable of melting steel and turning sand into glass. When the jiff is used underwater, it initially comes out equally burn down, but soon merely turns the surrounding water into steam, hampering visibility. He can also breathe diminutive fire through his nostrils, as seen in the episode "Bird of Paradise."

Additionally, he is capable of detecting Tachyon signals, which are particles traveling faster than light. As the serial progressed, Nick noted that Godzilla seemed to get more than intelligent.

Weaknesses [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla is generally considered to be the most powerful mutation in Godzilla: The Series , though he nevertheless has a number of exploitable weaknesses.

Godzilla seems to have an disfavor to brilliant lights - a weakness which was exploited by both Cameron Winter (who used powerful searchlights while attacking Godzilla with the Cyber Flies) and Maximilian Spiel (who used high-intensity quartz beams during Godzilla'southward battle with the Rhinosaurus).

Poison has been shown to impairment Godzilla more than most types of attacks. He is also vulnerable to dehydration, having almost died due to information technology when fighting the monster Medusa.

Electricity has washed some harm to Godzilla, although he is more often than not able to resist it - such as in his battles with the Crackler and the Lizard Slayers.

In the episode "Future Shock," information technology is revealed that Godzilla was killed by genetically engineered creatures chosen the D.R.A.One thousand.Thousand.A.s in an alternate hereafter, every bit his attacks and the combined might of all the planet's mutations were ineffective against the creatures. Thankfully, H.E.A.T. was able to avert this hereafter past having Godzilla kill the weaker juvenile D.R.A.Chiliad.M.A.s in the present.

Godzilla: The Series [ edit | edit source ]

N.I.1000.E.50. removed the Stimulator before Godzilla crushed the probe in his jaws, and began making his way to Winter's base of operations of operations. Equally dusk turned into night, Godzilla destroyed upgraded versions of the tank and helicopter Winter had thrown at him previously, and finally he arrived at the billionaire tech-guru's stronghold. It launched mortars, and dispensed Cyber Flies and tanks at him, but he ultimately brought the unabridged building to the ground before diving into the moonlit waters, and swimming for abode alongside the Heat-Seeker.
